NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 22, 2024) – American singer and pianist Jacob Tolliver embodies his real-life ancestor Bartholomew Taliaferro in his official music video for his debut single “Sunset Cemetery.”
The video follows Bartholomew, a man who has died and now haunts the cemetery where he was buried. He questions whether his wife truly loved him, torn between the memories of their life together and lingering doubts. The story unfolds in two timelines—one in the eerie, black-and-white present, where Bartholomew wanders the cemetery as a ghost, and the other in vibrant color flashbacks to his life, when they seemed to be a loving couple. Prior to the migration to America the “Tolliver” surname was “Taliaferro.” The real life Bartholomew Taliaferro was born in Venice, Italy and moved to London, England where he became a court musician for Queen Elizabeth I. While living in London, he owned and operated a mercantile. Next door to this mercantile was a tavern where he would frequent after business hours. It was at this tavern Bartholomew became drinking buddies with William Shakespeare. Shakespeare then loosely based his comedy, Merchant of Venice, around Bartholomew Taliaferro: The merchant from Venice. The song was produced by GRAMMY-winner Mark Neill with video production by Tolliver’s fellow Ohio natives Carla and J.D. Bentley.
“It’s not every day an artist can capture the vision that’s in their head. This music video, however, may be the first time I have accurately done so.
Taking on the role of my ancestor, Bartholomew Taliaferro, allowed me to dive deeper into the haunting story we wanted to tell. Rather than portraying myself, I wanted to channel something more timeless and fitting for the song’s eerie theme. I can’t wait for everyone to see the visuals we’ve created to complement this timeless tale,” said Jacob Tolliver.
